Jelica Saula: all geographies of one soul
white, yellow, employed and idle, drunk, sober, whether landscapes,
cities, streets, pubs, music, war, wine, city bustle, whispering, scream-
ing, mirrors, double-mirrors, new, old, nightmares, and mystery, se-
crets ... it's all in Jelica's poetry. But in her writing, there is not, by no
means, the so-called “engagement”, she never writes for the sake of
writing. Jelica is not a “poet for poetry sake” and her writing does not
serve to “raise her to glory”... or to keep her life's material survival!
Jelica is a poet who lives through her writing, not from it. Her writ-
ing keeps her alive on Earth as a lonely, physically fragile, analytic
soul, but with incredible power to describe with her magnificent inner
senses almost everything she detects in a sensual way, the anatomy of
everything we are, everything we are not, everything that surrounds
us at close range, at a distance, at all sides of the world of this Earth.
From bottom to top, to the Universe. The great Jelica's art is to address
the “lower” world with poetry from the perspective of that same Uni-
verse of which we are a metaphysical human twin. We are Universe's
twins living by not that many codes, but they are all unique, they are
“our daily bread”. Jelica knows with impeccable instinct how tiny
threads unite God and man. Threads are Godlikeness (to get oneself
through divinity) state of soul, morality and overloving (whole devo-
tion) towards the close ones or even unknown ones, towards close and
distant... And, also towards enemies whose enmity is not forgotten
but forgiven (forgiveness = Salvation, even when it's much unforgiv-
able!?), children and family, nature, birds, animals...Without being
pathetic, not because it is “in fashion”, therefore, Jelica knows to en-
grave everything into reader, permanently. The average, under-versed
reader may find it's easier to understand all of this if he/she knows
that the word religion comes from the Latin word re-ligio meaning to
return. To God, of course! Jelica is not an altruist and philanthropist
on the outside, she has not a task, she returns God's codes to our whole
being, to the root. She is all-loving and philanthropic and it's out of the
question, all the way, she lives it transferring it onto us!!! And so strong
and good, she incorporates into her poetry this divine double-essence
of what one was made and was intended by God. In the book “Starry
Eyed Soul” we encounter all what this paragraph of the essay describes,
but there is also enormous nostalgia mix... But in that book, we dis-
cover another Jelica: as passionate anti-globalist, an anti-globalist in
the most modern sense of the word. The anti-globalist who devotes
more contents of her books to the child/children as the greatest victim
of globalism, victims who are main symbol of the most violent mani-
festation of globalism. The book shows how globalism as a monster
of the 21 st Century simply eats this Planet literally, while majority of
other humans are horribly indifferent to any future. What is the future
if there are no children? And how can we swear in the name of the
kids! What a sin, what a horror, what a hypocrisy! Jelica's meaningful
anti-globalism is in the set of “The Votive Moments”, part of “Con-
versations with Silence / Starry Eyed Souls” book. The same book is
bilingual. When we read the whole book, we see how in a very clear
and sharp way Jelica deals with today's humanity era of post-truth and
almost absolute mind control. The same justified and deliberate fervor
against the New World Order is present in Jelica's poetry even when
patriotically confronted with the same NWO which destroyed and still
destroys our beloved and beautiful Serbia, all of us shedding tears for
all victims from all times, the latter in particular.
Some easier topics: how the memories of the old homeland warm
the soul? It is by an endlessly vigorous Jelica's love by her constant
almost visible emotional and mental present-day-presence in beloved
Srem, Fruska Gora, followed by Beshenovo village, Ruma, small area
Kudos, Borkovac with its lake, Stevan's Street... Also, beyond Fruska
Gora mountain, Ledinci village, Novi Sad, and his (and our) piece of
the Danube ... Jelica's verses are about what and how “fires ice the two
sides of the Atlantic” ... And which “oras” – auras visits sky and Earth,
what and who are the Canadians and what is beloved Canada, the
Beauty, as Jelica's second homeland... A reader of Jelica's poetry would
most easily feel it in the book "The Canadian Diary"- Serbian National
Academy – the emigrant's center of Serbia, Belgrade (1999). Also many
of these are in the first three of the four sets of the book “Distant Keys”,
City Library "Atanasije Stojković" Ruma, 2012, namely the sets in the
order: "Ruma Keys", "The Prnjavor Door". Mr. Saula, R.I.P., was quite
right when he sometimes referred to the poetry of his beloved wife
Jelica as - “Geographical poems”...
By humble and non-binding opinion of this essayist, the meta-
physical nostalgia incorporates into soul and heart, especially associ-
ated with what beloved Serbia experienced from the 21 st century world.
Jelica Saula described very explicitly in the book “White Angel Over
Serbia” – Rivel Co, Belgrade, 2002., also in the aforementioned books
“Distant Keys”, the fourth set of “Dreams – Secrets And Enigmas”, but
also in the book “Conversations with Silence” in the set “Loud Silences”.
Perhaps the more sophisticated reader of this essay will find that
the order the books are cited seems messy, scattered, not chronologic-
al. But this essayist did not even intend to give a view of Jelica Saula's
officially published opus in a proper and purely “bookish”, profoundly
professional manner.
Jelica Saula's poetry is a pure privilege if it is read by heart and soul,
if the reader has this “pair” inside. This is how this essay is written
from heart and soul, too. To the reader who, somehow, understood the
essence of Jelica Saula's poetry opus, here's a warm recommendation:
get the books, absorb the content without hesitation, without backlog!
And, thus feed and imbue yourself with the whole devotion and phil-
anthropy.
It heals! Tremendously.
